Professor Simon Skene
Prof Skene has over 20 years’ experience as a medical statistician in teaching and research, including the design and analysis of studies investigating medicinal products, advanced therapies, diagnostic accuracy and surgery.
Prof Skene's appointment at University of Surrey combines the role of Director of the Clinical Trials Unit (CTU) with leadership in statistics to support decision based-practice in health and medicine. He is additionally Head of Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine which brings the Clinical Trials Unit together with Surrey Clinical Research Facility and Surrey Sleep Research Centre in the newly refurbished Clinical Research Building.

Dr Hana Hassanin
Dr Hassanin qualified in medicine and surgery (MBBS) in 2000 and subsequently received a Doctorate of Medicine in Oncology and Immunotherapy in 2008 from Heidelberg University at the National Centre for Tumours in Germany with special interest in pancreatic adenocarcinoma. She has also obtained a PGDip in Diabetes from Cardiff University in 2011.
Dr Hassanin has more than 10 years experience in clinical trials. She has acted as Principal Investigator for over fifty clinical trials and has been Chief Investigator for a number of clinical trials across different phases I, II, III and IV and various therapeutic areas such as Oncology, Diabetes, Cardiovascular (Hypertension and Hypercholesterolemia), Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis, Insomnia, Benign Prostate Hypertrophy, respiratory diseases (COPD and Asthma), Immunology/vaccines, Urology ( Overactive bladder) and gastrointestinal diseases (IBS, constipation).
In March 2016, Dr Hassanin received a recognition award for broadening the understanding of clinical trials. She has received this recognition in the international educational event (Aware For All) organised by CISCRP, the Centre for Information and Study on Clinical Research Participation.
Before Joining Surrey, Dr Hassanin was the UK Medical Operations Manager and was managing the medical team/conduction of clinical trials of eight dedicated clinical research centres (DCR) in the UK. She also worked as the Diabetes Regional Medical Advisor for the south east of England covering Kent, Surrey and Sussex.
Dr Hassanin's appointment at University of Surrey as Medical Director of the Clinical Research Facility (CRF) combines a strategic leadership role with acting as Principal Investigator on clinical trials undertaken within the facility, taking overall responsibility for the day-to-day medical decisions. She is an active member of the University Ethics Committee (UEC).
