Laboratory

The Centre has its own on-site laboratory for the immediate processing and storage of study samples. It contains a range of equipment including refrigerated centrifuges and a Class II safety cabinet. The laboratory has a range of temperature controlled storage options including 4°C, -20°C, -70°C, -80°C and vapour phase liquid nitrogen (-160°C to -190°C). These refrigerators and freezers are continuously monitored via an alarm system ensuring that samples and reagents are stored at desired temperatures.

All sample preparation is carried out by experienced and trained laboratory personnel. Laboratory personnel are experienced in handling a wide variety of human biological samples including blood, urine, saliva and cervical and vaginal secretions, and staff are highly trained in a variety of processing techniques including high throughput PK/PD processing and isolation of PBMC. Laboratory staff are also trained to carry out sample shipments in accordance with IATA regulations.

Human Immunology research is conducted by the vaccine and mucosal immunology research group based in laboratories in the adjacent Leggett Building, with access to a range of equipment including flow cytometry, ELISA, ELISPOT, bead separation, imaging and microarray. The team works in close collaboration with the oncology research group to carry out short and long term tissue culture, antigen stimulation assays, as well as serology and mucosal biopsy and secretions analysis.

We have a strong working arrangement with Partnership Pathology Services, a joint venture between the Royal Surrey County and Frimley Park Hospital NHS Foundation Trusts. These laboratories are fully CPA accredited and undertake tailored tests on our behalf including biochemistry, haematology, immunology, microbiology and virology. These laboratories are associated with a rapid turnaround of routine, urgent and emergency results thereby enabling fast clinical decision-making which underpins all our studies.

If required, we also have strong working relationships with other external laboratories.
